Everyone knows that vitamins are healthy for the body and vital for its functioning. But do you know that vitamins deliver benefits not just when consumed as a part of healthy and balanced diet, or as a supplement, but also when applied to skin externally?
Yes, vitamins present in your everyday cream or lotion help your skin stay smoother, softer, silkier, and brighter. Let’s learn more about the skin and vitamin connection.

What’s skin

Skin is your body’s largest organ. It is made up of multiple layers and encases all the internal organs and skeleton, and shields the body from external environment. As we all know; the body can’t exist without the skin that covers it.

What are vitamins

Vitamins are a group of essential nutrients needed by the body in small quantities for its vital functions like production of skin, bone and muscles, cellular and tissue repairs, digestion and energy generation, and immune response etc. Vitamins play critical roles in almost every key area of physical functioning.  Vitamins also act as antioxidants that bind and neutralize harmful free radicals generated by pollutants and toxins inside the body.

Vitamins are of two types: fat soluble and water soluble.  Fat soluble vitamins can be stored by the body as reserves. Water soluble vitamins cannot be stored and any surplus is secreted out along with urine. Hence; water soluble vitamins have to be consumed on daily basis.

Vitamins A, D, & E are fat soluble vitamins. Vitamins B Complex (a group of several vitamins) and Vitamin & C are water soluble vitamin types.

Skin is often called the barometer of internal health. Inner wellness is often reflected by clean, clear and glowing skin.  This is quite simple to explain. As body’s metabolic functions require vitamins, healthy metabolism reflects in healthy skin.

Here are some key vitamins and their effect on skin:

vitamin

Vitamin A

The anti-aging vitamin for skin, it is needed by the outer as well as inner layer of skin. It helps shield skin from sun damage that can otherwise lead to collagen damage that in turn leads to skin wrinkles. It also helps in healthy functioning of skin’s oil glands, helps skin stay soft, and facilitates natural repair of skin damage.

Vitamins B Complex

This is a group of water soluble vitamins. Here are some key B vitamins and their roles in supporting skin health.

Vitamin B3: Also known as Niacin, it helps in skin brightening and reducing redness/ inflammation.
Vitamin B5: Also known as Pantothenic Acid/ Panthenol, it helps prevent loss of hydration and improves skin’s lipid barrier for softer, less lined skin.
Folic Acid: A type of vitamin B9, it helps boost collagen production for firmer skin. Collagen is the protein that gives skin its youthful firmness.

Vitamin C

This water soluble vitamin plays key role in collagen synthesis, the protein essential for firm, youthful skin. It also helps fade pigmentation, shields from photo damage responsible for skin wrinkles, and saves from free radical damage.

Vitamin D

This fat soluble vitamin is believed to reduce acne breakouts.

Vitamin E

A key fat soluble vitamin, it works as an antioxidant to shield skin from free radical damage. It also helps increase body’s Vitamin A reserves that in turn improves skin’s appearance. It is also believed to reduce acne eruptions.

Vitamin K

This fat soluble vitamin plays key role in blood clotting. For skin, this vitamin helps with fading of stretch marks, scars and dark circles.

How to make multiple vitamins a part of your skincare regimen

You can give your skin all the healthy benefits of vitamins in three ways:

As part of diet: Have a balanced diet rich in fruit, greens, grains, poultry and dairy to get your required dosage of vitamins.

As a supplement: Take a quality multi-vitamin supplement (after duly consulting your health care professional, of course!).

In skincare products: Choose skincare products rich in multiple vitamins. To do so, read the ingredient list and pick those products that have vitamins or pro vitamins as part of their ingredient tally.
